Know before you go

Portugal's Atlantic coast has a longer season than most Mediterranean destinations. Spring (April–June) and early fall (September–October) are our favorites: comfortable temperatures, softer crowds, and lower prices than peak summer. July and August are warm and lively but busier, especially in Lisbon. Madeira is a year-round destination thanks to its mild climate, while the Azores are best from late spring through early fall. Winter sailings can be a good value but bring more rain and rougher Atlantic seas.

Lisbon is the anchor of most itineraries and a popular embarkation port. Porto is reached via the port of Leixões, about 30 minutes from the city. Other stops include Funchal on the island of Madeira, Ponta Delgada (and sometimes Horta) in the Azores, and Portimão on the Algarve coast. Portugal frequently appears on Western Mediterranean, Atlantic coast, and transatlantic itineraries, so you may see it as one stop among several countries or as the focus of the voyage.

Lisbon is very manageable on your own, with trams, taxis, and rideshares readily available, but top experiences like Sintra's palaces, Cascais and Estoril, or Fátima are often smoother with a private or small-group tour, particularly on a timed port day. From Leixões, getting into Porto's Ribeira district and the port wine lodges across the river is easiest with a pre-arranged transfer or guide. In Madeira, guided outings for levada walks, Cabo Girão, and the mountain villages are a great use of limited time. We're happy to help you decide stop by stop.

Layers are best: Atlantic breezes can feel cool even on sunny days, and evenings are often cooler than expected. Pack comfortable, grippy walking shoes, as Lisbon and Porto are famously hilly with cobblestone streets, and Madeira's terrain is steep. Add sun protection, a light rain jacket outside of summer, and a swimsuit for beach or pool time.

Fresh seafood, grilled sardines, bacalhau, and pastéis de nata in Lisbon; port wine tastings in Porto; and Madeira wine and espetada (skewered beef) on the island. We're happy to arrange tastings, cooking classes, and reservations at standout restaurants in advance.

Absolutely. A few nights allow time for the historic Alfama and Belém districts, the food scene, and day trips to Sintra or the coast, plus a helpful buffer against flight delays. We can arrange hotels, private guides, and transfers. For a different pace, consider adding a Douro River cruise or a stay in Porto.

Canadian citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Portugal (up to 90 days in any 180-day period), which is part of the Schengen Area, and a valid passport is required. The EU's ETIAS travel authorization, which will apply to Canadians as it does to other visa-exempt travelers, currently has no launch date: the "last quarter of 2026" target was removed from the official EU site in July, and nothing has replaced it. Nothing needs to be applied for or paid today, and any website charging for ETIAS now is not official. Separately, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is already operating and collects fingerprints and a photo on your first crossing, so allow extra time at your arrival airport. We'll confirm requirements before you travel.
